Shaft Bottom Upgrade Manway Lift

Located in: Mosaic Potash Esterhazy K-2
The Mosaic Potash Mine is the largest producer and marketer of concentrated phosphate and potash crop nutrients in the world. Mosaic’s Esterhazy potash operations consist of two separate, inter-connected shafts and processing operations known as K1 and K2. Mining is conducted in the Esterhazy member of the Prairie Evaporates formation at 945 metres below the surface. The K2 operation is located about 15 km East of the town of Esterhazy, Saskatchewan.

In 2009, an upgrade was commissioned for the bottom of the K2 Shaft. The Manway Lift structure project was given to IKONA as a part of the whole Shaft Bottom Upgrade. The purpose of the Manway was to provide an enclosed ladder structure for mine personnel providing protection from surrounding hazardous elements. The manway provided access from the loading depth of 3197 ft to the bearing depth below of 3257 ft. The structure had to be designed and detailed in such a way for ease of mine-site fit-up in an area of the shaft with difficult access.
